I have wondered why Dickinson County has managed to have so much high quality public land. (I’ve also taught classes at Iowa Lakeside Lab…🙂). I’m guessing both county and state resources are involved. The “Iowa Great Lakes” are a special area, but as a central Iowan I would like to see the Dickinson County model widely adopted throughout the state.
Thank you Larry. I learned a lot about conservation and the outdoors by reading all your great columns at the DMR over the years. I think Iowans really want to do something good with repairing the natural world. If only they had some leaders who would lead!
Another excellent piece. You do a great job of weaving adventure, life experiences, facts about nature and environment, and reverberating effects of human actions. Thanks.
It must be so satisfying filling out a form asking for your current occupation and being able to truthfully answer ; explorer, adventurer, instructor, inspiration, thinker, writer, friend to many or any combination thereof. As always, thank you for sharing.
We continue to hear of Nitrate issues in our water supply in center Iowa.
I'm guessing in a few years it just wont be a ban on lawn watering, it will be a ban on drinking it!
I use to Kayak in Iowa (Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers -- I go out of state anymore).
If I go back to doing that -- (Kayaking in Iowa) -- I will put a clothes pen on my nose and insert ear plugs. I don't want that water infiltrating my body -- LOL!

Thank you Peter. Right now I'm still trying to figure out this crazy Substack ecosystem. I function better out in the natural elements!

Climate change is already brutal. Just wait till our next plague originates from melting permafrost.
Yikes! I've done some lectures about that. It actually could happen!
Exactly: “What is happening in the Arctic is not staying in the Arctic.“
